animals in the amazon rainforest

Close your eyes, and picture the Amazon rainforest. You most likely conjured images of a sea of green and colorful animals. The flight into Eduardo Gomes International Airport in Manaus, Brazil surprises many travelers. The Amazon's largest city is a pocket of urbanity deep in the Amazon. Manaus is a bustling port that two million call home.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Manaus became a thriving outpost for the rubber industry. Throughout the 20th century, Manaus continued to be a place of industry and has recently become a popular ecotourism destination. The city itself has some rewarding sights including a zoo, beaches, and museums. However, the main attraction is the Amazon, of course. To start this journey, consider staying at the Amazon Ecopark, located an hour from Manaus.

On the Tarumã River is the Amazon Ecopark, a privately owned tourism, scientific, and educational center that opened in 1991. This comfortable lodge has air-conditioned rooms, hot showers, and mosquito nets with a rustic Amazon atmosphere. The Ecopark Jungle Lodge complex offers an amazing pier, large open-air reception area with bar, game room, thatched roof hammock area, and 4 natural bathing pools and private beach. Guests enjoy all of these amenities plus jungle trails, natural savannas, and creeks for canoeing.
