Friendly Frog

The Red eyed tree frogs are predominantly found in southern Mexico, Central America, northern South America. They grow somewhere between 1.5 and 2.75 inches and have a life span of 5 years. These frogs are nocturnal carnivores. Despite their coloring they hide among leaves and catch smaller preys like insects with their sticky tongues. During day times, these rainforest animals sleep while being stuck to the bottom of large leafs, which entirely camouflages them. These rainforest animals diet mainly costs of anything that it can fit into its mouth, which can be another frog.

Even though these frogs prefer to live near water bodies, their feet are actually well equipped with suckers to climb trees and help them stick to leafs upside down! Their lime green body also helps them merge into the surroundings while stuck in such a way. Even though their body has bright coloring, the tree frogs do not show these colorings when hunting or sleeping. The bright red eyes of the tree frogs the result of an extra membrane which shields the frogs eyes from damage.

Animal Collective Tour Dates

Animal Collective are a peculiar act. An oddity. A sensory sideshow in a world of increasing musical banality. Despite having nick-names reminiscent of a group of children's show super heroes, (Avey Tare, Deakin, Geologist & Panda Bear respectively), Animal Collective have been creating mature Psyche-folk since the turn of the millennium, and while enchanting Club and Festival-goers alike, have constantly been just avant-garde enough to allude any major commercial success. However, 2009 seems to be something of an oddity also, seeing Animal Collective gain a top 20 album on both sides of the Atlantic following the release of Merriweather Post Pavilion. Yet to understand the gravitas Animal Collective yield, we must exhaustively examine the back-catalogue to find the song that epitomizes the Animal Collective 'sound'. Such an accolade must be presented to Grass, from 2005's Feels.

An awkwardly infectious Psyche-pop operation, Grass itself sounds, in equal parts, like 'Mr. Blue Sky' by E.L.O, the entire Bjork back-catalogue & an Alan Lomax field recording, and whilst utilising the both analogue & digital synths along side more conventional instruments, Animal Collective never fail to sound anything other than fresh and organic, almost embryonic in some cases. Grass, being the most obvious example of the band's tendency toward antagonistic dynamics, sounds hurried and anxious, the constant battle between cacophony and melody never truly Passive Voice (consider revising).

Grass warrants between half a dozen and a score's worth of listens before the dense layering of electronic noise starts to extrude itself, leading way to moments of unmistakable beauty and undulating vigour, as opposed to the abstract indulgence conveyed upon the first few listens. Despite the charging nature of Grass, they delicately weave themselves between intimacy & animosity, Avey's precariously uncertain warbling parenthesized by his affection for guttural screaming. This constant interplay becomes extremely hypnotic, absorbing even the most jaded listener into the oddly colourful, richly textured, Animal Collective world.

World Animal Health Organization

Zoonoses say what? You may have never heard this term, but, you have almost certainly heard of H1N1 or SARS or West Nile virus or Ebola virus. Zoonoses are microbiologic infections acquired from animals. Zoonoses can come in the form of bacteria, viruses or parasites. A "zoonosis" (the singular form of zoonoses) is any disease that is naturally transmissible from vertebrate animals to humans. It is estimated that over 60 % of all new human diseases are zoonotic and that over 70 % of these originate with wildlife and people having close contact with pets (especially exotic pets), wild animals or livestock or their food products. Studies over recent years have revealed a pattern of dangerous, even fatal, emerging new human diseases resulting from genetic mutations of known pathogens previously thought dead-ended in non-humans. The increased mobilization of both humans and pets, plus increased use of livestock and animal products have led to deep new concerns for the international health community. Not only the development of new diseases, but also, a recurrence of old diseases is being seen.

Some of these diseases, once transmitted to humans, have the potential to create pandemics, like the one now occurring with the H1N1 "swine flu" virus. Besides causing a direct health hazard to humans, they can also affect the world's food supply by requiring the destruction or quarantine of millions of dollars in livestock. The huge international trade in animal products for food, plus the large scale movement of people through tourism, have increased the opportunity for these pathogens to mutate and cross transmit between species. SARS, Ebola virus, H1N1 and West Nile virus are a few that have crossed the species barrier recently and now infect humans, sometimes with devastating effects. The mutated pathogens can be transmitted via the food chain, contact with infected animals or can even be airborne or waterborne in some cases. The increased encroachment of humans into wild animal habitats, the exotic pet trade and the increase in the numbers of animals raised in close proximity are also contributing factors.

What is being done about it? One of the obstacles is detection and identification of the disease syndromes. Lack of documentation of clinical suspicion and the difficulty in recognizing the causes is delaying the identification of these new diseases. The detection and follow up study of the infection's epidemiology will require huge investments and improvements in research. Efforts are underway through GLEWS (Global Early Warning System) in a joint system aimed at coordinating the alert mechanisms of WHO (World Health Organization, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) and others in the health community. Much more needs to be done and international cooperation is required. This is truly a World problem.
